Powerloader & Alien

So this was a figure that came with a game… OK, it was Colonial Marines: Collector’s Edition. I decided to look up how much the game itself is worth out of morbid curiosity – you can buy it for £2.49, and get it posted to your door. Yeah..

(For those who are not in the know, Colonial Marines is notoriously terrible).

So here’s the figure:

image

Maybe they should have produced this figure, and just shelved the whole game idea. I bought this for £19.50, though most of the auctions tend to run at £25-30 at time of writing.

The paintwork on the powerloader is especially impressive – the alien is mostly done with a blue wash type of thing, which looks a little odd in places, but works from a distance.

Let’s get a little closer to the action:

image

That’s one desperate xeno trying to get in there! The alien has nicely wedged itself up there, without clipping or anything.

Let’s see how the marine feels about this:

image

He doesn’t look too happy about it, and also his teeth have turned to flesh! Bit sad they missed his mouth, when it looks like everything else was painted.

Let’s see how the alien is getting along:

image

Bit hard to get a shot of his face, but it is nicely sculpted. Still looking hungry, I see.

Back of the diorama:

image

Amazingly, they’ve even textured the back of the diorama stand! Also a lot of attention to detail in the paintwork on this side of the powerloader. Love the dirty weathering effects.

Back of the powerloader:

image

All the wiring and gubbins you’d expect. Plus the cute little light on the top, and the aerials.

Now for the alien’s backside… is it as pretty?

image

I would say… not quite. From this angle, the blue wash looks a little blobby in places. You can see him prepairing to grab onto the powerloader’s arm for more stability, though.

From the top:

image

Bit of a random shot, but came out better than expected. The detail on the alien’s head looks good, and it emphasises the alien’s pose.

All in all, I really like this figure, and can see why it has held its value, more so than some of the other game collectables I’ve picked up over the years. The game also came with some iron-on patches and a map of the ship on tracing paper. The other touchy-feely bits were crap. I do feel I got a good figure for my money, and hey, I also have a joke present for anyone with a PS3…

Queen of Pain Nendoroid

Ordered this before Christmas, and was supposed to get it between Christmas and New Year. Got half of my order, then a dispatch notice. Waited five working days, and then asked the shop where the other item was at. Turns out the fulfilment centre messed up, and the shop owner managed to rectify the issue.

So finally, Queen of Pain:

image

I decided to go with the secondary faceplace, and equip the wings. This character seems to work well with Nendoroid proportions – not familiar with the character herself, but blue demon-y thing? Sign me up!

One thing I’d say for the front is the cut for the articulation is a bit odd, though I’m not the only one to comment on that.

Her left side:

image

Especially with the second faceplate, she seems to be a bit gappy in the hair. I may try to heat this at some point, and see if I can get her to go together fully. Some cute horns though 🙂

Right side:

image

Her ponytail articulates, which is a nice touch, and is in the lowest position here.

Back:

image

The shading in her hair is nicely done, and I do like the rings in the hair. Also, copyright of Valve :P.

Here are the other items she comes with:

image

The dagger can go into the hand shown, but won’t go smoothly without heat, which is why I didn’t equip it for these shots. You also get a spare joint (yeah, the GSC logo is on it, just not that side).

Overall, I’m happy with her, as a figure. She came with less accessories than I’d expect for a Nendoroid, but that will matter to me less over time, as I don’t tend to play that much with my figures. One annoying feature is that her arms tend to pop out when you rotate them, and the bottom half of her arm can come off. This leads to you having to push the bits back fully home once you’re done moving stuff. She is cute and well-painted though. I paid about the going rate for her – I don’t think she’s worth any more than that, but she’s probably on the cheaper end for Nendos.

Marvel’s Vision

This figure I picked up at Home Bargains. This is a very small figure that comes with a ‘spirit tank’, Sub-Ultron 011:

image

Was attracted by the colours,. and the fact it came with the tank accessory, to make it more interesting than the 2-figure packs.

Here is a close-up of Vision:

image

For a small figure, he’s well painted, but the purple on his chest looks kind of our of place, as it appears it hasn’t been designed with the mould in mind. Looking at pictures of Vision on the internet, it’s supposed to follow some contours on his suit, which has been lost in this rendition.

Here he is from the back:

image

The moulding is nice on this cape, but it’s only really kind of a bit bendy at the top.

Which leads to his articulation being pointless:

image

He really doesn’t have much articulation, but he is very small. Would’ve been nice to do something with the cape so he can sit, or give him knees so you could potentially do some poses, despite the cape.

Sub-Ultron 011:

image

The silver effect is nice, but the tank tracks are kinda wonky to the body, and the arms can easily fall off the body halves. Can imagine that’s kinda handy as a kid, emulating battle damage… but I don’t think they’re supposed to fall off.

Other views of Sub-Ultron 011:

image
image

It mostly looks OK as its own thing, but researching Sub-Ultrons, I don’t think this is accurate to what it is supposed to be. Sub-Ultrons are robots, and this appears to be more of an ethereal entity, due to the large use of unpainted translucent plastic. From what I can see, they should only glow blue in places, not be mostly blue. It looks OK in its own right, but doesn’t seem very faithful for what I believe it’s supposed to be.

Despite it being a vs set, I decided to do this:

image

Well, at least he can now sit, despite the cape!

Not entirely convinced by this purchase – I wouldn’t suggest spending much on this set, and this might be one of the smaller items I may pack away at some point. Still love the colours, but I’m not super-attached to it.

Medieval Witchblade

This was a random buy in a comic book shop I visited on the way back from Salisbury. It turned out to be located in a shopping village I had visited before, and didn’t think much of. In Wandering Shop style, the shop is scheduled to move soon to a larger premises, so maybe it’ll move every time I go to visit…

Anyway, onto the figure!

image

Her shiny green armour is what attracted me to her. Moore collectibles tend to have their good points, but just don’t quite get there in terms of quality, so it’s always a bit should-I-shouldn’t-I when I buy them. This one was a should. Not entirely sure why they bothered to give her leg articulation, with her legs in the pose that they are.

Here she is from the front, with some weapons equipped:

image

Her right hand really needs something in, due to that hole. Can’t really pose it so it won’t show, and it’s just too regular of a shape to look natural. It does hold a weapon well though.

Here’s her shiny green arm:

image

I do rather like the armour on this side. Well=painted, and a good amount of detail.

Left side:

image

This side is a lot more mediocre, especially with the large seam line down it. Probably wouldn’t want this side visible when displaying it.

Her back:

image

Some sculpted muscles in her back, not sure if they’re very lifelike. And some distinct copyright notices on her thighs. Not entirely sure why they gave her boots a seam line up the back… I do like her hair though.

Here’s a side view, showing more of the spear:

image

I do like the weapons – the colours work well together, they’re nicely sculpted and look the part to me.

She does come with a third weapon option:

image

So if that spear takes up too much room, you can go for the two shorter weapons. She doesn’t have anywhere to stow the third weapon, so you’ll end up with one in the figure parts drawer.

Overall, I like the figure, but it’s not a favourite or anything. Her looks do appeal, but she has some meh-ness about her. If I was in the position where I had to downsize, she’d probably be a candidate, but I don’t think there’s much of a market for Witchblade figures out there, at least in the UK.

And finally, I also bought this nether portal Minecraft hanger when I bought the medieval witchblade:

image

This will eventually go onto a new hanging rail, once I get one added :).

Triton & Minecraft Minis

I went into Toys R Us, and they were having a sale, so I picked up the following items, plus a bunch of DC Domez, which I probably won’t blog about, as it was sadly mostly dupes.

First up, Triton:

I’m not familiar with this character, but I liked the colours and the fact he had a fin on his head. The articulation is pretty nice for these figures – you get all the articulation points of a larger figure, though some of the joints can be a bit stiff/bendy due to the figure’s size.

Left side:

Yep, he has a head fin :). The paint job, what there is of it, is mostly competent. Bit of slop around his boots, but isn’t particularly noticeable unless you’re looking for it.

Right side:

Yep, is a ditto of the other side.

Back:

He’s been sculpted back here, but some the joints look very joint-y. Head looks somewhat on the odd side. For a small figure, it’s not much of a biggie tbh.

As a figure, he works well. Just find the RRP for these figures to be too high for something so small, despite the quality. They also don’t come with any accessories, but at least one hand posed for one, which is mildly annoying. May have to go hunt the accessory pots for stuff.

Now onto the Minecraft Minis:

Had to pick up the pack with the slime in it 😛 The slime doesn’t disappoint, and I do rather like the mooshroom too. The on-fire zombie rounds out the set – he looks fine, but isn’t a figure I’m particularly interested in.

The sides:

The zombie is nicely asymmetric, mooshroom has the most interesting profile imo. And the slime is nicely done with its solid cube centred in translucent gunk.

The backs:

Not much junk in these trunks, but no horror stories either. It’s a nice little set, but not one I’d pay RRP for. These fellows will find themselves nestled somewhere in one of my display shelves. Or replacing some of the blind bag rubbish that isn’t very good.

Harley Quinn – Mattel ver

In all the B&Ms I’ve visited thus far, I’ve only ever seen the true peg-warmer figures of this set. Recently they were reduced to £5, but I still wasn’t interested in picking up the “meh” characters.

Then I visited Salisbury, and they happened to have just the one Harley! Whilst I didn’t like the Suicide Squad movie, I do love Harley’s look in it.

For me, all the figures  look a little on the tubby side, but she is a bit in the movies. The figures just seem to emphasise it. This figure does have some paint flaws, but I had a choice of… this one or this one. Her left leg is also a bit gappy – not sure if I can fix that.

Shot so you can see the bat:

To me, the bat feels too long, and looking at pics, it is too long. Though it is probably painted better than the figure, lol. I’m guessing the bat was recycled from some other figure, as it should only be as long as the writing on it.

The sculpt isn’t super-detailed, but seems to have the important bits represented. If it wasn’t for the bits of stray paint, it’s not a bad paint job. Don’t think the figure would have been worth full price, but I have got my fiver’s worth.

Left of Harley:

Looks OK, nothing particularly out of place, red circles on her arm give her a bit of a cheap feel.

Right of Harley:

To me, this side seems a bit better, but there’s not a lot in it.

Her back:

Hair ends a bit flat, but she’s complete from this side. Having the clasp on her choker is a nice touch, and the straps for her holsters are nicely detailed. Is some very noticeable slop on her left boot though, from the leg paint.

Overall, it’s not a bad figure, but it definitely has a “toy” feel to it. Kind of surprised that some of the less peg-warm-y figures didn’t hit the cheapo stores, but that’s probably due to a lack of other figures in the cheaper end being available. Maybe if the MAFEX/Figurarts ones were more available here, there may have been more that made it to the cheapo aisles. She’s an OK figure, but I wouldn’t recommend paying over the odds for her.

Bad Taste Bears – Rustle & Henry

Bought this pair from a seller on eBay.

First up, Rustle:

image

I remember seeing this one when I was younger, and wanting it for no real reason. At the time I was living at home, and would have never got away with it. Now I’m older, the bears don’t seem to be as controversial to me as I thought they were at the time. They’re also well made imo,

Here is a side shot:

image

Definitely looks like he’s having a good rustle from this angle!

And the back:

image

Not much to say about this angle – has all the detail you’d expect.

Next up, Henry:

image

Not quite a Henry hoover, but I’m thinking the lawyers would have something to say if it was. Certainly seems happy with his vacuum cleaner, even if it doesn’t share his name. Love the face given to the vacuum.

Shot of the back:

image

Again, not much to say here. Fur texture’s nicely done.

Couldn’t resist another couple of these cheeky bears, and they also have a strange nostalgic element to me. I got them pretty cheap, and I’m happy with my purchases.

Harley Quinn – Gold Edition

Was wandering through an Asda, and came across this:

The price wasn’t bad, so I decided to buy it. Cue an age-long wait at the tills as it wasn’t even in the system yet, and they had to sort it out XD. On returning home, I did some research and it’s actually a Walmart exclusive, so I’m glad I decided to buy it, as I probably wouldn’t see it again, outside of eBay XD. For those that don’t know, Asda is owned by Wal-Mart, so it’s likely to be exclusive to Asda in the UK.

As for the figure… it’s gold and very shiny! Parts of it are metal, other bits I’m pretty sure are plastic. She articulates around her waist, but it’s not in a very pleasing way to me.

Here is her left side:

The shoulder joint is a bit gappy. She’s painted well though.

Right side:

This shoulder has less of a gap, but the seam on her head is a bit more obvious on this side.

The back:

Can’t miss that CE mark :P. Her hand is nicely sclupted, and the paint is nice and crisp here too. No hiding the join between the parts of her hat though.

Happy with the figure. For me, this figure meets expectations – the price for me was slightly on the high side, but it is nicely finished for the most part. So if you like your Harley in gold, you can get this one.

Poison Ivy

I’ve had my eye on this one for a little bit, seeing as I saw it was released, but not really in the UK yet. Went to a local comic shop who were selling her for a good price, so I couldn’t resist picking her up, despite my December overspend.

The vine is a separate part, which can be posed however you like. The detail in her face is also impressive:

Looks like she paid special attention to her makeup this morning :).

Right hand side:

Love the vibrant red colour of her hair. Her skin is also nicely painted, giving it a very skinlike appearance.

Left side:

Hiding behind the leaves! I have them mostly going over her legs, are they are very much an expanse of green – on one side this does give you the place to display them, on the other hand she looks a bit too much on the bland side without the extra leaves. Her top is nice and leafy though – however, I’d prefer it if they prioritised the leaf shapes over the top shape, as it looks a little too flat imo.

Back:

Perfect angle to admire her hair :). Maybe not as competent as more expensive figure manufacturers, but it does the job, in an eye-catching red. There uis a bunch of shades in there though, which does help it along.

The base and her shoes:

A very simple base, but works surprisingly well. The boot painting is very eye-catching though, and I really like her footwear. The base is a translucent green, which matches the figure and probably looks better than the photo I took here. It’s not a base that’s going to win awards, but it works with the figure, and is more exciting than a plain disc, and doesn’t detract from the figure.

This one is likely to have a prominent position in my new display cabinet… once it has been built… Can’t have too much Poison Ivy!

Harley Quinn

This was the second figure for Christmas, but for this one I only saw the box beforehand, as it doesn’t have a window in the box (and the figure itself was in a well-taped polystyrene cube).

And this one is ¾ of Harley Quinn – one of my favourite characters. This figure was more detailed than expected, so am pleased about that. I like the two textures used on the base.

Here is a close-up of her face:

I like the expression she has, and the contrast in her face. Her ruff is pearlescent, which stops it from blending too much with the skin.

Harley’s left side:

She has a tattoo on this side, which is a nice touch, and in this photo you can see the leather strap that holds the hammer in place. I thought this was a nice touch, as it does its job well, without being intrusive. It’s nice having the hammer as a separate part, as it helps it to look realistic (some figures have the accessories moulded in, and it always shows to some extent).

Harley’s right:

Here you can see the detail on the hammer, which is nicely wood-like, and her nicely painted glove. The belt of bullets also looks good.

Back of Harley:

She has a nice cape. but the paint in the middle isn’t quite done right, which is a bit of a shame. However, this doesn’t bother me much, as I won’t be seeing this side often.

Am glad I got this figure – it was nicer than I anticipated it to be, which is always a good thing. The mixed media, with the straps on the top and the leather holding the hammer are very nice touches, which help the figure stand out. I’m particularly pleased with the hammer’s texture too.

Can never have too much Harley 🙂

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst figure set

I bought this for £5, along with the Star Wars figures featured in my last blog.

In the set you get these three figures:

From left to right these figures are: Icarus, Faith Connors and Kuma. As I’ve only played the original Mirror’s Edge, I’m only familiar with Faith. As this was a limited edition set, the GAME I visited only had one set on the shelves.

Before we get into the figures themselves, all the bottoms of the bases are the same and look like this:

The bases themselves are magnetic, and the feet of the characters stick anywhere on the top face of the base. I like this feature, as the base holds them well, and they’re not easy to knock over, plus no pegs to break.

Onto the figures! So let’s start with the main character, Faith:

Here she is, with her expression of grim determination. We also have matt and shiny paint finishes, which really helps the figures stand out. And all the paint seems to be in the right places, which is a massive achievement for figures of this size.

Here’s Faith’s right side:

… showing the edition number and her tattoo. The tattoo is nicely done, and I have 2426/3500. As expected, it’s in the higher end of the edition numbers, but maybe not as high as I’d expect for buying it during its selloff period.

Faith’s left side:

No tattoo this side, and I like the way they’ve posed her arm and hand so it looks like she is about to do something.

The back:

Nothing much to see here, but the details have all been finished off as expected. Crease continue to the back on her trousers, her bag strap is fully detailed. If I wanted to nitpick, I can point out the paint flaw on her armband, at the top.

Now for Icarus:

I do love the shininess of his clothing, and a credit to the game designers to make him “match” with Faith.

Side of Icarus:

He has looser clothing with more creases compared to Faith, which is a nice touch. I like the way his arm warmers are creased realistically around the wrist. Icarus’s other side is more of the same, so skipping that.

Back of Icarus:

Not a huge amount to see here. Might be nice if the back of his hoodie had some detailing, but I found one screenshot showing his back, and there’s nothing there. Does seem somewhat unnaturally flat – maybe some extra creasing could have left it looking less plain, like his trousers.

Finally, Kuma:

A cute little robot design, but the paintwork ends up looking sloppy, due to the white paint not finishing smoothly in a couple of places. If I had a choice of sets, I may have checked his paintjob in another set, but I’m not hugely bothered, as Faith was the one I was really after, with the other two being nice bonuses. He is a rather cute design though.

Kuma’s left side:

This one’s name is easy to remember, what with it being written on him ;).

Kuma’s right side:

Can see some of the less-smooth painting on this side, on his head, which is a bit of a shame, compared to the other figures.

Kuma’s back:

Some nice detailing here, but some lumpiness on his head, that I’m not sure is part of his character design.

In conclusion, this is a nicely painted set, especially for its size. Would be better if Kuma had some more attention paid to him, but I didn’t pay full price, so I’m not fussy. Originally the set was £18, which would be more than I would’ve wanted to pay, but probably justifiable for the quality of the figures. For £5, this set is a steal imo, if you’re into the Mirror’s Edge franchise.

Bad Taste Bears: Scarlet & Skully

I bought these in a figure shop, just prior to Christmas.

First up, Scarlet:

image

I remember seeing this one years ago, and wanting to buy it. But as I lived with my parents… wasn’t gonna happen. But now I have… her?

She comes fully equipped with her own handcuffs:

image

And edition number stamped on her backside:

image

I also got a keyring at the same time. His name is Skully:

image

Aww, isn’t he cute? 😛

A pic of the back:

image

So now I own 3 Bad Taste Bears. May own more in future, should I come across any cheap enough that I like. There are a few I could truly call “bad taste” but a lot of them seem rather tame to me these days.

Ahsoka Tano & Anakin Skywalker

Saw these in GAME for 99p, so I couldn’t resist. Not hugely into Star Wars, but these were nice looking figures for a cheap price.

First up, Ahsoka:

And in the writing of this article, I have learned that Twi’lek and Togrutas are two different speicies, and Ahsoka is the latter.

And Togrutas have three head-tails:

From this angle she looks particularly mean with her pair of lightsabers:

Love the use of colour in this character, and the bases for this set are nice and thematic. There is also little in the way of paint flaws on this one.

Now for Anakin:

Lookin’ grumpy with his lightsaber, but also a bit dinged up, and not intentionally so.

Side view:

Can see the marks on his leg more on this shot, but you can admire the pose chosen.

Back:

He has a weird dot on his head – looks like a hole in the outer layer of finish, and some scrapes on his coattails. Seems to be a reoccurring issue with the figures with large black areas – pretty sure the black colouring makes these marks more obvious, but it does seem to be something the darker characters are more prone to having.

Maybe if I looked more at the sets, I could have had an Anakin with less marks on him, but tbh, I only bought this set for Ahsoka, but it’s something to be mindful of if you’re going to pick up your own set.

For 99p, this set is cheap enough that even if you just like the character designs and want to display them, it’s worth picking up (at the time of writing, it seems readily available). The set also comes with a clear piece, but it’s not really a good display piece, so I didn’t photograph it.

Spawn – Shadowhawk

This is the figure I bought with the one in the previous blog.

Here he is in all his glory:

He certainly remembered to bring a weapon to the fight! Or six. Here’s a close-up of his upper weaponry:

Getting some Wolverine vibes from his face.

Here’s a close-up of the grappling hook:

This weapon actually fires, but it’s more like a spear as it doesn’t have a thread.

Close-up of the gun-knife:

It’s got all the attachments! Not entirely sure if it makes the gun more deadly. You could probably clobber multiple people at once with it though, should he run out of ammo…. Though he does have that pointy knife in the grapple hand.

Here’s his back, showing where the cables are attached at his back:

The cables, unlike most other figures, came attached. Was a bit interesting getting him out of the box, but at least they won’t have the distinct disadvantage of falling out. Does mean you can’t display him without his weapons, but I’m not bothered about that.

Side shot of the wiring:

This was originally the shot for the gun, but it came out clearer in the other pic. So you can admire his clawed hand on this side, which also has the notch for the grappling gun.

So if you like your action figures armed to the teeth, this one is for you! Not sure I would’ve picked him up if it weren’t for the freebies the comic shop guy threw in, but getting him out of the box, he’s grown on me. Especially in the first photo in this blog, he does cut an imposing stance.

She-Spawn

Bought this from a comic book shop in Bath, along with another Spawn figure (coming soon!).

She had a few parts to assemble – the “gun”, shoulder armour and leg armour, plus the sword she has in her right hand. Without the accoutrements, she’s quite a slender figure with them… well, she’s quite bulky now. But not quite Spawn bulky.

Here’s a closer shot of her upper half & shoulder-mount… thing:

Mmm, skull boobs :P. The launcher on her shoulder can figure the spear in he beast’s mouth.

Other side of the launcher:

Is quite a big thing, with an articulated ‘tail’.

The back of She-Spawn

Her hair is rather like an extended soft paintbrush, but it is a nice touch I like that some of the Spawn figures have. Enough details on the back for her to feel complete as a figure.

Despite the amount of attachments, she was surprisingly easy to balance, though there is the option not to equip everything. The shoulder cannon does leave an odd hole, but the other two parts are simply clipped on. Her one annoying part is the sword – it’s not very well shaped to her hand, so she doesn’t grip it well. It just about wedges in there, but I can see myself white-tacking this in future (or boxing it). My favourite details are her asymmetric belts and the skulls ;).

Kaki, Troll and…. food?!

So here’s some random figures I had to get… The troll figure I got some time ago, but didn’t judge it blog-worthy on its own, but now I have Kaki, I can blog about the pair.

So here’s Trollface:

image

Yep, that’s deffo a trollface. And here’s Kaki:

image

And yep, that’s definitely a poo. Waited for these figures to bin, which they indeed did. These are the two I wanted from the collection, the others don’t really interest me, even for bargain basement prices. They’re seriously not worth their original retail value, but at the price I paid, they’re fine for a novelty.

Now onto food…

image

A happy, hungry sprout! Just in time for Christmas!

image

I bought him from a charity shop, and we were debating if he was a cabbage or a sprout. The final conclusion at the shop was sprout, but I still think it could be either. See what you think after seeing his back:

image

Bestest. Figure. Ever. And I bet you thought that’d go to Kaki :P.

More Domez!

So… managed to end up at Toys R Us again, and bought 3 more Domez. This time there was the added bonus of them being cheaper!

I managed not to get any dupes:

First up, Catwoman:

I initially opened these up in the dark, so didn’t see the scratch on her head :(. This is the favourite of the 3 I opened, but I may have to do something about that mark… darnit.

Batman:

It’s… Batman. Looks OK from this angle, but the mouth makes him look a bit derpy.

Lastly, but definitely least, Superman:

Yeah… what the heck is going on with that face?! I’m not a fan of Superman at the best of times, and this one… well. Face is super-derp and the head looks more out of proportion than the others.

Ah, that’s better. This angle actually looks OK! Back of his head doesn’t say “Superman” to me, but hey, I don’t have to look at that face any more.

Ignoring the scratch on Catwoman’s head, I’ve got 2 that I like, one I’m mediocre about and one that might get hidden in a drawer. Not a bad pull.

Figure Spotlight – Big Daddy

This was one of my first figures. I went to GAME to buy the original Bioshock, and the collector’s edition was only £5 more, so I went for it, because, hey Big Daddy figure:

image

The other parts of the collector’s edition are scattered to various corners of my house, and this is the only thing that is out and displayed.

Here’s the side with his hand, where you can see some of the meh-ness of the painting:

image

And here’s his drill hand:

image

Here you can see some of the blood effect, which is spread over various places on the figure.

And finally, the tanks:

image

Hm. Don’t think the paint effect they were going for really worked here.

Not sure what the collector’s edition originally went for, but even if I was into collector’s editions at that point in time, I don’t think the figure really justifies a large increase in cost. Can’t argue with £5, you get a decently heavy figure that looks like something from the game, but the paint job isn’t the best. I think they could have dialled down on the bloodstains – I think it would be more effective to have it on the drill and maybe one other place. With it being in various spots, it kind of makes it look even less realistic to me – I’m not a massive fan of “blood” spatter on figures, as it rarely comes out well.

All in all, not a bad start to my collecting habit.

Figure Spotlight – Headless Horseman & Sinister Squashling

Say hello to WoW’s Headless Horseman:

image

This figure I bought in 2012, and he’s still as awesome as the day I got him. He comes with a “base” featuring his horse bursting from the ground:

It has one peg for his right foot, so the base only semi-stabilises him, This is probably the weakest part of the figure – he can be a bit prone to falling on his backside whilst you’re posing him, but once posed, he does tend to stay. His armour is on point though.

Here is a couple of closeups of the horse:

The texture’s done nicely on this figure, and the plastic surface feels rougher than your average figure, which fits in with the theme of this figure nicely.

His cape has a great sense of movement, but also a pain to dust because of this:

His head is also detachable:

Which is kind of essential for a headless horseman!

If that amount of awesome wasn’t enough, he also came with a sinister squashling, which was a mob that attacked during the encounter, and you could get it as a pet:

I remember wanting to get this figure in no small part thanks to the squashling – it was my fave non-combat pet at the time, and I just have to have a li’l one I could sit on my desk.

Several years on, this is definitely one of my better Western figures, and a testament to the quality of Blizzard’s figures. Would recommend it to anyone who likes its look, as long as you can get it for a non-super-scalp-y price. I got a ridiculously good deal on this figure, looking back.

Len Kagamine & Sam Flynn

Two figures that don’t really have anything to do with each other… but I opened both on the day of writing.

First up, Sam Flynn. Decided to pick him up at last, was one of the Disney Infinity figures I was pondering getting:

Here’s a closeup on his disc-holding hand. The scupltwork from this angle does look good:

And from the other side. His leg does look like it’s got an extra joint from this angle!

Overall, a good figure, especially for the price I paid. I wouldn’t want to pay a lot for them, so the clearance discounts on these figures has been nice.

Next up, Len Kagamine. I saw this figure on a Black Friday deal, but found it straight-up cheaper on Amazon UK. As I have a Prime trial right now, I got him the very next day after ordering. Here he is, out of the box:

D’awww. small and cute! He came in 3 pieces, plus the base. Not entirely sure why they didn’t package him assembled, lol. He even came with an instruction sheet, not that one is really needed!

Here is a shot of his right-hand side:

And one of his left:

And the obligatory back shot:

The figure is very nicely painted, and is the quality of a miniature scale. However he is tiny. I was expecting him to be small – after all, he was advertised as 1/12, but somehow getting him out of the box, he was still smaller than I thought:

Doesn’t exactly tower over the Infinity figure, but at least he has the quality of a larger scale put into the wash. I’d say he’s worth the RRP, but not much more. Largely, his price seems to have gone up in the aftermarket, but for his retail price, he’s a fine-if-small figure.
